PlainPermit is a free reference that summarizes publicly available permit rules from official city, county and state sources. It is not legal advice and not an official government site.
Always confirm locally
Permit rules change, and your property's zoning, HOA rules, historic district, floodplain status or utility work can change the answer. Before you start work, confirm with your local building department. Each page links to the official source and shows the date we last checked it.

We work to keep the information accurate, but we can't promise it's complete, current or right for your situation. You use it at your own risk. To the extent the law allows, we aren't responsible for fines, delays, rework or other costs that come from relying on this site.

Fees shown are estimates taken from published fee schedules. Your actual fee is whatever the permitting office charges.
